Clinique Chubby Stick VS Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm

Since Clinique first launched the Chubby Sticks the beauty industry has gone crazy for cute little lip crayons in an array of different colours and formulas. Today I put two to the test, the first is the original Clinique Chubby Stick in Voluptuous Violet and the second is the ever popular Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm in Elusive. Both have mixed reviews and both have gained a cult following but the main questions still stands. Which one does it better?

Packaging and Price – Clinique Chubby Stick
clinique normal
This is the original Clinique Chubby Stick in the shade Voluptuous Violet, I love the clear lid and of course the cute little crayon form of the product. I like how the writing is reflective and of course there is the signature twist up feature of the product at the bottom which is also reflective. I quite like the look of this product. The price I am not so much a fan of the price, for one chubby stick you are looking at £17.00 at Boots (click here to buy) which I think is extremely hefty for one lip crayon.

Packaging and Price – Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm

I do quite like the matte coloured packaging of the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm and I do think that is echoes the fact that this is a matte product which I do like. We are presented with the same reflective writing and reflective twist up feature so for packaging points have to go to Clinique simply because Revlon has made their packaging too similar. I have to prefer to the price of the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm though the price is £7.99 for one of these at Boots (click here to buy) and you can even get it three if you’re good at working the infamous Boots 3 for 2 deal.

Scent and Texture – Clinique Chubby Stick
One of the weaknesses of the Clinique product has to be the scent. It smells really strongly of play doh which just makes my stomach turn and makes me want to keep the product as far away from my lips as possible. I think for the £17.00 price tag the least Clinique could have done was infuse the product with a nice scent would that have been too difficult? I find the texture almost a little sticky which I’m not a huge fan of, it’s not overly noticeable but if you like to layer up the product to get a bolder colour (which I do like to do) then there is a slight stickiness.

Scent and Texture – Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm Stain
I much prefer the scent of the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm Stains, they have a more minty scent which reminds me of Twinings Peppermint Tea and they feel cooling on the lips when applied which I love. There is no stickiness with these whatsoever, just a hint of moisture which is the balm feel, but nothing that can’t be dealt with. I definitely prefer this product so far.

Colour Payoff and Longevity – Clinique Chubby Stick

If I’m honest I have to say that the colour payoff of the Clinique Chubby Stick absolutely sucks. I bought Voluptuous Violet hoping for a beautiful bold violet colour or at the very least a lovely tint but there is barely anything there at all which I hate. I can get exact same colour payoff and tint with the Body Shop Born Lippy in Passionfruit and I’d be saving £15 as well. I don’t find anything particularly amazing about the longevity either like any lip balm I find that it tends to just wipe straight off, so far I’m extremely unimpressed.

Wow just wow, the colour payoff of the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balm is absolutely amazing, it’s so pigmented and vibrant yet it can be blended into the lips. I love how easily you can build up the colour as well, I’m so impressed with this. The longevity is pretty good as well, I put this on my lips half an hour ago and since then have drunk a cup of tea and the colour is still on my lips. I think I’m really falling in love with this product.

Finish – Clinique Chubby Stick

What on earth is wrong with this product? I barely have any colour on my lips at all and could have just applied a clear lip gloss or a clear lip balm and had the exact same effect, I would also like to point out that in these photos I really layered up the product to get as much colour as possible, and this is what I have.

Look at the finish on these products, I absolutely love it. A beautiful bold colour with a matte finish that lasts, I really think Revlon have hit the jackpot with these products, I am so impressed.

Colour Range – Clinique Chubby Sticks
There is a wide range of the Clinique Chubby Sticks which I do have to applaud them for, with a choice of twenty colours, if this sort of product is your thing then you definitely have plenty of choice.

Colour Range – Revlon Colourburst Matte Balms
There is ten different colours of the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balms and then there is ten different colours for the Lacquers and then more colours for the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stains, after doing testers in Boots I think the Revlon colours are all very different and each and every one of them is beautiful.

Overall Verdict
I definitely prefer the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balms, they just tick every box for me for lip products and I will definitely be purchasing more of these. Unfortunately I can’t say the same for the Clinique Chubby Sticks and I just found that for the price they were really disappointing even if they did start the lip crayon revolution. If you haven’t tried either of these but you want a product that feels nice on the lips, lasts for ages and has a lovely bold colour I would definitely recommend the Revlon Colourburst Matte Balms, they’re much more cost friendly and better too!

Great review, those clinique chubby sticks seem so disappointing, especially for the price! But I totally agree with the whole review on the revlon ones, I love them too xo

  2. Great comparison! I’ve never tried The Clinique version but I do have one of the Revlon products and it is really nice! I like the minty scent too especially for tea! And I just found you on Twitter too, yay 🙂

    • Aww yay I can follow you back now on twitter 😀 And thank you so much honestly I wouldn’t bother with the Clinique ones they just suck but Im very happy with the Revlon ones 🙂

  3. I love my Revlon Colourburst! Just waiting for the next 3 for 2 to get some more colours 😀

  4. Armed with a lipstick says:

Ahhhh! I can´t belive that you don´t like Clinique Chubby Stick! 😀
Ok, I don´t have the same one you tested, but I have one called woppin watermelon, which ( in my opinion anyway) is the cutest spring color ever!
No stickyness at all and almost no scent. Which I personally love.. 🙂
About adding any scent to the product – Clinique is as allergy free as possible and a lot of people get allergis out of ingredients that make products smell.
    Though, I haven´t tryed Revlon ones…

    • Yeah I wasn’t a fan of the Clinique Chubby Sticks at all I just find them overpriced for what they are. And yeah I am one of those people who reacts to scents and things but christ the thing didn’t need to smell like play doh XD I really like the Revlon ones and would recommend that you try them 🙂
